PEDALL began in 2017 with a single van, a handful of cycles, and a simple goal: to make cycling in the New Forest accessible to everyone.

Growth in rides and access to cycling in the New Forest
PEDALL welcomes people who face barriers to cycling, including those living with long-term health conditions, mobility challenges, disabilities, dementia, or brain injury. Through specialist cycles, supportive guided rides, and a welcoming environment, PEDALL helps people of all abilities experience the freedom and enjoyment of cycling.
In 2025, PEDALL delivered over 7,000 rides, supported by a growing network of volunteers and partners across health, education, and community services. Year-on-year growth continues, with a 217% increase in rides since 2021, reflecting both rising demand and the programme’s expanding reach.

Measured improvements in wellbeing, confidence, and physical activity
PEDALL’s impact is most clearly seen in rider wellbeing and confidence.
97% of riders say they feel happy after cycling with PEDALL, with the same proportion feeling excited to be in the Forest and outdoors in nature.
96% report improved strength and fitness, while 100% of volunteers say the programme has a positive effect on participants’ lives.
Alongside this, 87% of riders say they have gained confidence to try new activities, and 92% feel happy cycling in a group, showing the importance of both movement and shared experience.

Long-term participation, volunteering, and sustained engagement
PEDALL is built on partnership and people – from volunteers contributing thousands of hours each year, to families, schools, and care groups who return week after week. On average, riders stay with PEDALL for 22 months, with over 63% riding at least once a month, reflecting the consistency of engagement and the sense of belonging the programme creates.
